I am proud to report that I made it through a big health flare-up last week. What a journey! I am reminded of the cyclical process of healing, where symptoms present and diminish in repeated cycles, rather than in a linear up or down.
In the work of self-healing and spiritual growth, we face a returning cycle of symptoms with increased capacity and wiser perspective. Pain and suffering inspire us to move beyond the surface of life and pursue supportive practices like massage, yoga, acupuncture, therapy, and meditation. In doing so, we build inner resources and find connection, insight, and empathy with like-minded community. We rise along the upward spiral of healing.
When my symptoms first resurfaced, my first reaction was to resist the inner chaos, feel more anxious, and resent that the trauma is back. And then, I found a millimeter of perspective and began to respond differently.
Each time an issue resurfaces is an opportunity, in fact a golden opportunity, to heal the deeper patterns behind it. Triggering moments are the most potent time to rewire the brain. By pausing to take a break from the overwhelm, your nervous and immune systems may get new input that this experience is containable, that you got this. In this pause, you may see a contributing factor to your pain that is actually in your locus of control. You may discover new ways to “weather the storm” and be kind yourself through a flare-up, knowing that all experience is impermanent and will change.
It is an honor to walk with you on this path of healing and recovery.
