Chatting with my aunt the other day, we were talking about how sometimes we just need to power down. Like how devices need to shut down in order to update the operating system, to fully reset, so do we.
I think of this as a conscious pause to digest life, taking quiet time without sensory stimulation or activity. Nothing to watch, listen, or interact with. So much of our world offers up a banquet for our senses, and sometimes we are full to capacity. It's time to digest.
I like to make the choice to power down before my life overwhelms me and I shut down in some way, like fatigue, sickness, or depression. Sometimes life decides for us that it's time for a break. If I can catch my need for a real break before I break, I can usually reset with less time and effort than I would have guessed.
This conscious pause can take many forms:
A yoga class mid-week
An afternoon siesta
Your monthly massage
A vacation from work
A break from screens and devices
Savasana at the end of yoga, or as a break during the day
A meditation retreat
Three deep, cleansing breaths with eyes closed
How will you pause and reset?
